Panthère de Cartier has been a key element of the house’s jewelry and watch designs since 1914, with one stylish and witty woman serving as its defining early inspiration.
Belgian-born Jeanne Toussaint moved in the same Parisian social circles as Coco Chanel and illustrator George Barbier during the early 20th century. It was during this period that she met Louis Cartier, then the artistic director of Cartier Paris.
The eldest of the three Cartier brothers, Louis admired Toussaint’s strength, independence, and daring personal style. Known as “La Panthère,” she would become one of the most influential figures in Cartier’s history.
The house introduced its first panther motif in 1914 on a women’s wristwatch, with onyx and diamonds creating an abstract suggestion of the animal’s coat. Toussaint later joined Cartier’s accessories department and, in 1933, was appointed director of high jewelry.
In 1917, a figural panther made an early appearance on a cigarette case Louis Cartier gave to Toussaint. Crafted in platinum and onyx, the cat was shown pacing between a pair of emerald-embellished trees.
As Toussaint’s responsibilities at Cartier grew, so did her influence among the era’s international social set. Her clients included Barbara Hutton, Doris Duke, and Marjorie Merriweather Post, who became admirers of the house’s jeweled compacts, lipstick cases, and other precious objects crafted in gold and platinum.
Toussaint continued to evolve the panther over the ensuing decades, expanding the motif from its abstract, Art Deco-era origins into the sculptural, three-dimensional representations recognized today.
Among Toussaint’s highest-profile clients were Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor following their 1937 marriage.
One of Toussaint’s most famous Panthère commissions arrived in 1948, when the Duke requested a panther that would sit atop a 116.74-carat cabochon emerald from his collection. The resulting brooch featured the feline in 18-karat yellow gold with black enamel and emerald eyes, positioned above the massive gemstone.
The royal couple returned the following year for a second design: a panther crafted in platinum, diamonds, and onyx, crouched above a 152.35-carat cabochon Kashmir sapphire.
The Duchess was frequently photographed wearing her Panthère jewels, but she was far from alone. Heiress Daisy Fellowes also favored Panthère designs, while Hutton admired Toussaint’s panthers and tigers alike. Other collectors included Princess Nina Aga Khan and two legendary Marias: Mexican film icon María Félix and celebrated soprano Maria Callas.

Highly tactile designs include a bracelet and necklace, each featuring a pair of finely detailed feline heads seemingly staring each other down while playing tug-of-war with diamond-embellished tubular gold.
The face-to-face panthers bring a graphic tension to the pieces, reflecting the animal’s contrasting qualities: playful and commanding, elegant and untamable.
As another chapter in the continued evolution of Panthère de Cartier, the collection honors both an enduring house icon and the woman who helped transform it into a legend.
