Tiffany Haddish knows how to stay busy. Over the past decade, she has diversified her career by writing books, creating music, performing stand-up comedy, and filming movies.
Haddish makes her debut at Encore Theater on Friday, June 27 as part of the “The Funny and Fearless” tour. For one night only at Wynn, she will sing, dance, and perform a little comedy, then open the floor to the audience for a Q&A session. We sat down with the Girls Trip star to chat about why she loves performing and playing in Vegas.
What are you thinking about going into this show? What do you have planned?
Whenever I think of Vegas, I think: feathers, sequins, glitter, glamor, diamonds, men carrying me. I want everything—then I found out how much it costs. We are going to do a nice basic curtain. We're gonna do imagination. The thing that's gonna have the glitz, glamor, sparkles, blinged out, all that will be my body. I'm gonna be dressed to the nines.
I'm bringing music. I'll be performing some live music. My opening acts are phenomenal, undeniably funny. My opening act is Barbara Carlyle, who's been doing comedy for 30 years. Then we’ve got Flame Monroe, a transgender comic who's very, very funny. And then you’ve got me, Tiffany Haddish, for about an hour. I'll be talking about fashion, and I'll be talking about my dating life. And then I'll open the floor to the audience for the last 10 to 20 minutes to ask me anything they'd like.
You’re going to take questions from a Vegas crowd?
Yes, I'm excited. Here's the thing with my comedy show: people want to talk to me because they think they're my friend. And you know what? A part of me thinks I’m their friend, too, so we’re going to have a friend talk.
You're doing everything now. You're an author, you’re singing, doing movies, comedy — What do you like the best? What do you want to do more of?
My favorite part of it is the stand-up, the live performance. If I could do more live performances where I'm stationary, such as on Broadway or in a Vegas residency, that would be ideal, because then I could incorporate all my modalities in one space. When I'm doing stand-up, those are my writing skills. I'm getting immediate gratification. Laughter is my drug of choice.
You are undoubtedly one of the best-dressed women in comedy. Do you work with a stylist, or do you do this all on your own?
I work with stylists, but I also develop relationships with designers. I met this up-and-coming designer, and she said, “Let's design something together.” And she and I designed this whole collection of beautiful, sparkly gowns and things you could wear to prom or to a party. Her name is Fashion FairyGodmother, and she's been donating these prom dresses to young girls. I think I'm gonna do a rewind on one of them, because it was so cute. I think it's Vegas appropriate.
What’s in your next book?
I’ve got some poems in there, some challenges in there — I'm gonna challenge my fans to certain things — and then some more stories and more things that I've learned. As I evolve, my writing has evolved as far as what I'm talking about, spiritually and mentally.
What are you filming?
Three movies, and getting ready to film one more. After that, I’ll drop three children’s books, and hopefully a cartoon to follow.
What has been your experience at Wynn?
When my agent said to me, ‘They want you to perform at the Wynn and Encore casino,’ I was like, ‘That's one of my favorite hotels to stay at.’
Who have been some of your favorite performers to see in Vegas?
Janet Jackson. I saw Celine Dion, and I cried.
You were with Jo Koy recently, and he has headlined Encore Theater. Did he give you any advice?
I call Jo for all kinds of stuff. We don't give each other advice so much as share stories and experiences. He's my favorite. That's my brother right there. When he performs in Vegas, I go out there just to watch him. I just gotta support family. You have your family you were born with, and the family you make; he's a part of the family I made.
